KOTA KINABALU - A 20-year-old unemployed man, who was filmed beating his wife in public, was sentenced to one month's jail after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Berhamin Sakib pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie at the magistrate's court here on Monday.

He was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to his 16-year-old wife, Nurbainah Bading, at about 9am on July 15.

The incident was caught on video and went viral soon after.

The court was told that Berhamin had slapped and pushed his wife until she fell when he saw that she was holding a knife.

She had allegedly gone to confront him about their marriage after he refused to give her money to buy diapers for their 10-month-old son.
