Use of English in Tamil programmes: MediaCorp replies

We thank Madam Murugeswathy Ramasamy for her feedback ("Ensure proper use of Tamil on Vasantham channel"; Wednesday).

The programme Friends seeks to explore different themes each week, such as home decor, photography and the environment, which require the use of English words to explain related jargon and technical terms. Friends also features members of the public sharing their views and expert knowledge, some of whom are not very fluent in the Tamil language.

As a national broadcaster, we acknowledge the importance of promoting our mother tongue with the proper usage of the Tamil language through our programmes. Vasantham will continue to monitor the language used in its programmes and minimise the use of English wherever possible.

We look forward to Madam Ramasamy's continued support.
