Veteran unionist K. Karthikeyan will speak up for workers' interests in Parliament: NTUC

SINGAPORE - The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has welcomed the appointment of its vice-president K. Karthikeyan as one of the nine Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs) announced today.

NTUC president Diane Chia said in its statement that as a caring and dedicated union leader, Mr Karthikeyan will speak up for workers' interests and welfare in Parliament, so as to help them at their workplace and achieve a better life for themselves and their families.

The NTUC submitted its nomination of the veteran unionist, who is also the general secretary of the United Workers of Petroleum Industry, for appointment as an NMP in May this year.

The other eight who have been selected to be new NMPs are: lawyer Chia Yong Yong, veteran historian Prof Tan Tai Yong, The Thought Collective co-founder Kuik Shiao-Yin, Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Thomas Chua, Singapore Board of Architects president Rita Soh, doctor and former national sailor Benedict Tan, labour economist Randolph Tan and banker Mohd Ismail Hussein.
