VIP service at briyani party

President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Mrs Mary Tan serving briyani at Khalid Mosque in Joo Chiat as part of an annual charity event yesterday.

They were joined by (from left) Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim, chairman of the President's Challenge charity briyani organising committee Paiman Supangat, and Khalid Mosque chairman Alauddin Mohamed.

Mosques in Singapore sell the rice dish to raise money at the event, which is now in its 15th year. It is an Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) effort to get the Muslim community to contribute to the President's Challenge. Thanking the community, Dr Tan said: "Food is one of the important aspects of Singapore life and the charity briyani touches on that in order to bind Singaporeans together in a very unique way."
