Wanted man killed in shoot-out after car chase

IPOH - Police shot and killed a wanted suspect after a 15-minute car chase from Kuala Kangsar to Salak in Sungai Siput.

Perak CID chief Datuk Senior Asst Comm Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim said the incident happened at 5am when the suspect, K. Mehavarnan, 32, was trying to escape from the police.

"Police first approached the suspect, who was behaving suspiciously, in his black Proton Waja in Kuala Kangsar. But he managed to flee to Kampung Kati," he said in a press conference here yesterday.

"An Ops Cantas team that was in the area spotted the car and gave chase before the suspect lost control of his vehicle and crashed near a flyover in Salak."

SAC Mohd Dzuraidi said the suspect then alighted from the car and started shooting at police officers.

"The police fired back in self-defence and gunned him down," he said.

He added that the police found a semi-auto pistol, with 10 9mm bullets, two gold necklaces and three packets of powder, believed to be drugs, from the suspect.

"The car had a fake registration number plate. It was reportedly stolen in Pekan Baru here," he said.

SAC Mohd Dzuraidi said Mehavarnan, from Ipoh, had two previous drugs-related cases, one for causing grievous hurt with a weapon and was wanted for a murder case in Simpang Pulai in 2013.

"We also believe that Mehavarnan was involved in other drug and violent crimes," he said.
