It was one of the most horrifying sights.
A woman, believed to be in her 60s, was found beheaded in a Long Island, New York, street on Tuesday night.
Some time later, a man jumped in front of a train, the New York Daily News reported quoting witnesses and police.
The man was found a few metres from the woman's body.
Police are trying to find the link between the two and believe they could be a mother and son.
A police spokesman would not say how the woman was killed, but witnesses said she appeared to be the victim of a beheading.
They told local TV station PIX11 that they originally thought the gruesome find was a Halloween prank.
Said Mr Jack Imperial, a witness who was taking a taxi to a meeting when he stumbled upon the body: "I've seen some gruesome stuff in my years of living... but nothing like this. I didn't expect to see something like this, especially not out here."
Mr Imperial said the taxi driver "got sick" after seeing the woman's disembodied head and quickly sped away.
The duo wondered if what they had seen was a seasonal prank, he said.
"I thought it was a Halloween hoax. There was no big splatter of blood. It looked staged," Mr Imperial said.
A dispatcher for Yellow Cab Corp said that several of the company's drivers, who pass the block after picking up passengers at the train station, had reported seeing the stomach-turning scene.
"One guy said he needs therapy now," said the dispatcher, who declined to give his name.
"They said it was one of the most disgusting things they'd ever seen."
It was not immediately clear if the killing occurred outside or in the nearby apartment building.
The identities of the dead man and woman were not immediately released.
