A 50-year-old man who died in a fire in Singapore had gone to the republic to earn more money to pay for the education of his five children, Tamil Nesan reported.

R. Rama Devi, 44, said her husband, K. Ramu, went in March to work as a cleaner.

He was among four Malaysians, all cleaners, killed in a fire at a workers hostel in Geylang early on Saturday.

Her husband, she said, was supposed to have returned home at the end of the month.

Rama Devi said she was in a dilemma now as she had to cover the schooling expenses of her children by herself.
