Woman nabbed for smuggling puppies

SINGAPORE - A 33-year-old Singaporean woman was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint on Sept 9 for attempting to smuggle 13 puppies into Singapore.
The puppies were discovered during a routine check. They were in three black cloth bags hidden under the driver's seat, the front passenger's seat and the glove compartment of the Singapore-registered car, reported The Straits Times online.
The puppies are now quarantined at the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority's (AVA) Sembawang Animal Quarantine Station, to be observed for clinical signs of infectious or contagious diseases.
The case is still under investigation.
The AVA, together with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), issued a public advisory on Thursday reminding travellers against bringing live animals, birds and insects into the country without a permit.
The authorities stated that "animals smuggled into Singapore are of unknown health status and may introduce zoonotic diseases, such as rabies".
