Rani Suntika, 18, and Dedy Junaedi, 19, were arrested by the North Jakarta Police for allegedly trying to sell their baby boy for Rp 7 million (US$488 or S$683) because of economic difficulties, the police said Monday.

North Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Susetio Cahyadi said that the couple had offered the baby even when Rani was still pregnant because they could not support themselves, let alone pay the hospital costs.

After giving birth, they met a woman named Neti who then brought them to another woman - a prospective buyer, Susetio said. "Suddenly, an unknown woman came to Neti's house and gave them Rp 2 million (S$194) saying it was to cover the delivery costs. She promised to give another Rp 5 million in November."

Having named the young couple as suspects, the police are currently investigating some witnesses, including Neti, to decide whether they were also involved in the illegal adoption.
