California Fitness stays on top with diverse range of classes

California Fitness takes first place with 43.8 per cent of the votes from AsiaOne readers in a recent poll.

The gym chain helped spark the Asia fitness revolution over a decade ago with spacious and well-equipped gyms. In a sign of its staying power, it occupies the number one spot in spite of the many fitness centre operators out there today.

This could in part be due to its Group X (or group exercise) classes - California Fitness says it was the first to bring Group X to Asia, and adds that it is still number one in this area with the most diverse range of classes.

An interesting feature of California Fitness gyms is the Xpress Zone - a time-saving circuit training area common to all their gyms - where machines that target different body parts are placed together.

Taking second place is another gym chain - Fitness First, with 17.9 per cent of readers voting for it.

If you are the type who tends to forget your workout top and shorts, or find it a hassle to bring them to work, you will be glad to know that the Fitness First gym chain provides a daily complimentary set of workout attire at its Platinum clubs.

The outlets at Capital Tower and OUB Centre provide a nice bonus - outdoor gym areas where you can enjoy fresh air as you work out, while heated swimming pools can be found at Capital Tower and One George Street.

Coming up in the third spot is True Yoga, which took 11.9 per cent of the votes. Billed as Singapore's largest premier yoga studio, it offers over 35 types of yoga, hot yoga, dance and pilates classes. These include ashtanga yoga, hatha yoga, hatha vinyasa yoga, kundalini yoga, power yoga, pilates, yogalates, hot yoga, prenatal yoga and even kids' yoga.
