Don't miss Pine Garden's pineapple tarts again this year!
They were sold out quickly last year so Pine Garden is baking more batches this year.
The openface tarts are topped with a generous layer of soft, nicely sweetened grated pineapple, covering the surface till near the edge. The buttery, soft crust partners the pineapple like perfect bedfellows.
They are possibly one of the best pineapple tarts in Singapore this season. You'd need to buy a lot this Chinese New Year. Otherwise you'd see them disappearing fast what with your whole clan descending on your home.
Another must-have: any of Pine Garden's buttery cakes. All are delicious, in particularly the cranberry kueh lapis. Nice touch of festive red in this layered cake that only Singaporeans and Indonesians can do so well.
Pine Garden's Cake, 01-2369 Block 529 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, tel: 6457-6159.
Opening hours: 8.30am to 9.30pm daily
Another scrumptious pineapple tarts or rather pineapple rolls are from Cedele outlets.
The soft pineapple filling is encased in a buttery crust. The pastry crumbles when you sink your teeth into the delicious grated pineapple. If Pine Garden's pineapple tarts are sold out, quickly grab Cedele's.
Cedele has many outlets in Singapore, with locations at Great World City, Raffles City and Parkway Parade. Also, the coffee pinenut cookies (rich coffee flavour and aromatic) and cheese cookies are superb - great for those who don't like traditional almond or cashewnut cookies.
Cedele has about a dozen types of cookie available this season. And the best part? No trans fat.
And also, some are egg-free!
Wah Lok's Pineapple Balls are a hit with fans
For a Chinese style pineapple tart, Wah Lok Restaurant in Carlton Hotel has one of the best. Almost round like a ping pong ball, the glossy buttery pastry is embedded with soft grated pineapple.
Unless you have a big mouth, popping a whole one in is not a good idea. Nibble it appreciatively instead.
If you have guests who don't pineapple, grab Wah Lok's Bo Luo Buns. These soft buns, topped with a crispy crust, are filled with flavourful and juicy chopped char siew. Absolutely delicious. Buy and freeze them if you're getting them in advance. Defrost and pop into a toaster to warm it up.
Crystal Jade Bo Luo Pineapple Cookies
Another yummy Chinese version of the tarts done up in the style of Hong Kong Bo Luo buns, with crispy top. The mini bun's crust is buttery and the pineapple filling delicious. To impress your guests or gift recipients, buy the one with gold flakes on top.
Here's a French interpretation of the pineapple tart.
This is a big galette of buttery puff pastry filled with grated pineapple and almond paste.
It's available at Royal Plaza On Scotts hotel's Gourmet Carousel at Scotts Road. We can only say that it's incredibly delicious with different layers of flavours melding into a mouthful of satisfaction.
Delifrance has its version too but we haven't tasted it.
And for something that's also big but shaped like a heart, check out Pan Pacific Hotel's big pineapple tart. Topped with pretty flowers made of pie dough, it's presented in a gift box.
Would you give your heart this Chinese New Year. The last day of celebration, February 9, is the Chinese 'Valentine's Day', five days away from Valentine's Day.
So love is definitely be in the air this season.
Meanwhile, make love to the yummy pineapple tarts recommended above.
