What do cheese cookies have to do with Chinese New Year, asked a colleague.
Well, I don't know. What I know is that these nibbles by Pine Garden's Cake are scrumptious. Bite into one and it becomes soft crumbs and cheesy specks.
For a more traditional festive treat, try the shop's cranberry kueh lapis (Photo 4), which is neither too sweet nor too greasy.
As fruity kueh lapis go, firm and tart cranberries are a better fit for the rich cake than squishy, sweet prunes. The ruby-red bits look more festive too.

Cheese cookies, $10.50 for 300g, and cranberry kueh lapis, $33 for a small one, from Pine Garden's Cake, 01-2369 Block 529 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, tel: 6457-6159. Opening hours: 8.30am to 9.30pm daily
