RETAILERS are cutting short
their Chinese New Year
(CNY) break to cash in on
shoppers out and about during the
festive period.
Shops here typically open for
business on the fourth or fifth day
of the festive period, which traditionally
lasts for 15 days, starting
from next Monday.
This year, however, some retailers
are opening their shops as early
as the first day of CNY, to do business
in what they expect to be a
tough year ahead.
TS Group, a major retailer and
wholesaler of home-entertainment
videos with 23 outlets, said business
would be "very good" during a
long weekend as "more people go
shopping".
The weekend holiday starts tomorrow
and ends next Tuesday,
and the company hopes to "earn
more money" during this period.
TS Group will open all its outlets
from the second day of CNY. It
would even operate on the first day
if some of the malls where its outlets
are located were open.
Madam Tan Siew Choo, 44, does
not have the same problem, and she
will open her provision shop in
Bukit Batok on the first day of the
new year.
"I want to cater to the people visiting
their relatives in the area. My
relatives can visit me here instead,"
she said.
Ms Yap Beng Choo, 52, who
owns Glasil, a kiosk selling jewellery
and accessories at Liang Court,
will start business from the second
day. Last year, her shop was closed
for nearly a week.
"I want to catch customers who
go shopping during the holiday, as
well as those who don’t celebrate
CNY," she said.
This is good news for people like
marketing executive Derek Ng.
"The last thing I want to do on a
long weekend is to watch boring
movies and reruns on television,
and eat nothing but instant noodles
because the shops are all closed,"
the 27-year-old said.
