Also try the Mandarina Luck ($1.50 each) that are actually custard pies filled with orange peel, but made to look like oranges. Delectable desserts from Royal Plaza

Gourmet Carousel is best suited for those looking for non-traditional treats. Until Feb 9, the restaurant is offering a pineapple galette ($40; pictured above), a Singaporean twist to the traditional French galette. Made with layers of puff pastry and roasted pineapple, this tastes like one big and delicious pineapple tart that would be a perfect ending to a meal for guests during CNY. Kids will love the Mandarin Orange Pralines ($2.20 per pc or 9 pcs for $17) and the festive macaroons that come in two flavours – Mandarin Orange and Pineapple ($2.20 per pc, $11 for 5 pcs; also pictured above).

Traditional treats from Orchard Hotel

Try award-winning restaurant Hua Ting's Happiness fish-shaped Nian Gao ($23.80), a traditional Chinese New Year's cake prepared from glutinous rice. It is considered good luck to eat the cake during this season because "nian gao" is a homonym for "every year higher and higher", so bring it along when visiting your elders, they're bound to appreciate this old adage. If that does not strike your fancy however, you can also try the Cinnamon Blossom Water Chestnut Cake ($19.80) that should appeal to everyone young and old.
