Make a simple scrapbook consisting of your family pictures, highlighting the growing stages of you and your siblings. Flip through the scrapbook together with your mom and naturally, she will tell you about the growing but fun pains in the family.
If you have no idea where she keeps her stash of pictures, you could also team up with dad to find out more about your mom - her favourite records, tapes, memorabilia - and get her to give you a trivia quiz on her. She will be pleasantly surprised to learn that you know so much about her.
3. Cooking up good times
If your mom prides herself on being able to feed her family with delicious home-cooked food, let her relax this Mother's Day while you whip up a meal for her! You might not have the culinary know-how to whip up a five-course dinner, but creating a simple item just for Mummy dearest will probably warm the cockles of her heart more than a lavish dining experience at the best restaurant in town.
Does your mom like noodles? Try creating a simple pasta dish with linguini, tomatoes, garlic and minced meat. Is she a chocolate-lover? Buy a simple sponge cake from the neighbourhood bakery, look for a rich chocolate cream from the supermarket, add whatever ingredients you fancy to the cream and layer it generously over the cake. Does she have a secret fondness for alcoholic drinks? Who not make a cocktail especially for her?
You might not be the best chef, baker or bartender around, but the knowledge that you made the effort to create something just for her will make her beam. After all, it is the thought that counts
4. Play the night away
Spice up the boring dinner with some board games! Bring the whole family out to a board games cafe, and play the night away over dinner.
Here’s a list of board games cafe that would allow your mom to relax and have fun:
- The Mind Cafe (Purvis Street, Boat Quay, Prinsep Street)
- Settler's Cafe (Holland Village, Central Mall)
- Oasis Board Games Cafe (Liang Seah Street)
If your mom walks the ‘tai-tai’ path, make her feel like she's on a roll with a game of Mahjong. Let her keep the winnings, but if she loses, pay for her loss. Remember, it's Mother's Day so help let your mom's hair down and keep her happy!
5. Girl's day in
See the lines and wrinkles that are taking a toll on your mom's face? Why not try some DIY facials at home?
You don't have to be a lab expert to conjure up the perfect formula to counter those wrinkles on your mom's face. All you need is a trip down to the supermarket and voila, a homemade skin care regime that is environmentally friendly
Here are some skin care ideas that you can try out with your mom, without hurting your wallet and still look like a million bucks:
- DIY Facial Scrub Using Orange Pulp
Using your juice extractor, remove the pulp and immediately scrub it on your face after gentle washing. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes so that the skin can absorb the vitamins. Wash it off with lukewarm water, and pat dry your skin gently.
- DIY Organic Mask
Mix 2 tablespoons of honey, 1/4 cup of brewed and cooled Green Tea with 1/2 cup of Dry Oatmeal until it is thick and lumpy. Spread the mixture evenly on your face for 10 minutes until it dries. Peel off the mask and rinse your face with warm water.
This DIY recipe is good for your skin because honey and oatmeal make a good moisturizer and it tightens pores.
