Nominated cars

As can be seen from this European-brand dominated list, 2011 was a year for European car makers as COE prices soared. Nevertheless, there are still a few Japanese contenders for AsiaOne's Car of the Year. Take your pick.

Audi A1   Audi A7

Outstanding design, build quality and features are the hallmarks of this new class of Audi. Its compact size translates to good driving fun.   The luxurious fastback is a cross between an estate and a coupe. Several features such as a head-up display and night vision can be specified.

BMW 1-series M   BMW X3

Don't mistake the smallest BMW M race car to be a mouse at heart. With massive torque available from a low 1,500rpm, the speedo will jump from 0-100kmh in just 4.3sec.

The second-generation sport utility vehicle looks even better than its predecessor. Its ride feels less like a rollicky SUV than a powerful saloon, firm and supple. Impressive build quality and luxury features.

Ford Mondeo Ecoboost   Hyundai Elantra

The new Ford Mondeo houses an engine that delivers better performance with lower fuel consumption than previous models.   With sharp lines that are at the same time smooth, this Korean saloon punches above its competitors in the family saloon segment with its good looks.

Renault Latitude   Renault Megane CC

This executive saloon packs a punch in terms of its storage size and interior equipment. It's also quite pleasing on the eye – a refreshing change from the usual fare of Toyotas and Nissans.   Like the other French marque in this list, this coupe-cabriolet is eye-candy. A well-equipped interior and high COE prices make it a good buying proposition.

Saab 9-5   Lexus CT200h

The saloon marks the Scandinavian company's return to our roads after a long absence. Cool styling features such as a wraparound cockpit help it to stand out even more.   The petrol-electric hybrid has a ride that's smooth as silk and a lounge-like, lush interior. Youthful looks and sharper angles than your usual Lexus fare means a wider appeal.

Mercedes-Benz C-class   Mercedes-Benz C-class coupe

This facelifted series has impressed even without considering its cosmetic tweaks. A seven-speed transmission, a quiet cabin and smooth drive makes it quite the complete package.   This two-door coupe has everything going for it – stylish looks, refined drive and badge appeal.

Mercedes-Benz CLS   Mercedes-Benz SLK

This luxury cruiser has a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 that gives it a bite when you push hard. Rear passengers will have no problems at the back in terms of comfort and legroom.   This hard-top convertible has nifty features that could turn it into a top hit.

Mini Cooper Countryman   Opel Astra

Mini's first SUV is also its first four-door vehicle. Another first: all-wheel drive. Stylish yuppies with families can now look forward to the huge Mini.   Looks-wise, the Astra is one of the more outstanding ones. It's also car that's built for cyclists. It has an inbuilt bicycle carrier that extends from the rear bumper and can carry two bikes.

Peugeot 508   Peugeot 5008

This Pug gives refined driveability with a 1.6-litre engine that is matched to a six-speed Tiptronic gearbox. Good looks a plus.   Peugeot's first full-sized MPV is a good-looker that can pack seven people comfortably. The expansive glass ceiling and raked windscreen make for a roomy and 'airy' cabin.

Peugeot RCZ coupe   Volvo V60

This coupe should be a feather in Peugeot's cap. A planted ride and well-sorted handling makes driving a delight and a breeze. It's a capable head-turner as well.   Volvo's first offering in the 1.6-litre class has handsome looks and a powerful engine for its size. An upscale set of equipment ensures that the wagon stands apart from the segment.

VW Jetta   VW Passat

This sixth-generation Jetta is a leap and a bound ahead of its predecessor. A luxurious and well-appointed cabin, refined ride and smooth handling puts it ahead of its class.   Volkswagen obviously had a busy year, what with all the model introductions. This refreshed executive saloon looks handsomer. Its sprightliness belies its size.

VW Polo GTI   VW Sharan

Don't mistake this for its sibling without the three letters. The pocket rocket promises delirious fun on the roads with its fleet-footedness and power.   A family-oriented full-sized MPV, the Sharan's seats are easily manoeuvred out of the way to get you more space. Entry and exit is easy with two sliding rear doors.
