Dozo

If you and your gal pals love trying multitudes of new dishes but hate wasting half a plate of food, degustation menus may be just the solution.

Dozo, tucked away in the quiet Valley Point shopping centre at River Valley Road, is a fusion restaurant which operates on an interesting degustation menu concept. Each meal is divided into several courses, and you can choose one item from each course to create a personalised menu.

Much attention is given to the presentation of the food, and the menu items are updated periodically. Chances are that there will be something for almost everyone here.

We like the fact that Dozo feels like a fine-dining restaurant, minus the triple-digit prices. This is great for celebrations or special occasions with your best pals.

Cuisine
It brands itself as a modern Japanese restaurant, but "fusion" would better describe its cuisine. Expect culinary influences from France, Italy, and of course, Japan.

Portions
Individual portions may seem small, but considering that dinner is a 7-course affair, one is bound to be satisfied.

Setting

Warm colours and dark wooden furnishings combine with elegant draperies to create an posh yet relaxed ambience. Tables are generously spaced apart - perfect for cozy tete-a-tetes. Private rooms are also available for those dining in larger groups - but do call ahead to request for them.

Must-tries
• Beef tenderloin on pu-ye leaf: Tender beef, with the slightest flavour from the pu-ye leaf. It arrives on a sizzling hot stone so you can actually control how well-done you want the beef to be.
• Green tea creme brulée: This twist on the classic French dessert is a showcase of contrasts in flavour and texture - bitter and sweet, smooth and crunchy.
• Iced fruity refresher: Possibly the best drink on the degustation menu. It is sweet, refreshing and we love the diced fruit that comes in the teapot.

Price factor
$38.80++ for a 6-course lunch
$58.80++ for a 7-course dinner

Things you didn't know
Some dishes come in larger portions than others - so if you are a hearty eater, go for lamb shank as your main course.
It is usually less crowded during lunchtime, but do call ahead for reservations, just to be sure.

Verdict
The plush environment, coupled with the decent food and friendly service, make this restaurant perfect for tete-a-tetes with your best friend.
