Satay is one of the country's most popular local dishes. However, over the past six months, a spicy kind of satay has caught the attention of pedestrians on Jl. Asia Afrika in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

The chicken skewer, dubbed sate taichan, is served with a dollop of spicy sambal (chili sauce). It has proven to be very popular with customers.

One of the sellers, Yusuf, recently told tempo.co that the dish came from China and Taiwan.

Originally, the satay dish used pork or rabbit meat served with soy sauce. However, the local version has been modified to chicken meat and sambal.

In addition to its spicy sambal flavour, one of the things that sets sate taichan apart from other satays is the skinless meat and plain white colour.

Before grilling, the meat needs to be marinated in a mixture of stock, spices and salt. Unlike other satays, the grilling process only takes around 10 minutes to avoid charcoal burns.

Priced at Rp 25,000 (S$2.70) per portion, sate taichan is worth a try, especially for those who like spicy food.
