Blue chips show their true colours

THREE of Singapore's big blue chips showed their mettle in a treacherous year, and not only survived but came out ahead of the competition in this year's Singapore 1000 awards.

DBS, for one, managed to snag the top prize for the finance sector at the S1000 awards in two categories - net profit excellence, and sales/turnover excellence. Part of the reason why it managed to rise above the difficulties is due to the opportunities that came up as a result of the crisis - and of course, its ability to snap them up.

'DBS weathered the crisis relatively well because in 2009, some of the global banks scaled back their Asian operations due to the global financial crisis and economic recession,' said a DBS spokesman.
