Hindus all over the world make preparations for the upcoming Deepavali festival, celebrated on October 17, 2009. Earthen lamps and, in some countries, fire crackers are carefully sculpted by hand.
In Singapore, Indian religious and cultural symbols such as peacocks, oil lamps and lotus flowers are decked out in lights to transform Little India into one big festival town for Deepavali 2009.
