It was a stormy night, but inside the Mandarin Oriental hotel ballroom, the mood was warm and celebratory, as past and present United States officials and top businessmen took turns to thank and pay tribute to the man they credit with forging closer political and economic ties between the US and South-east Asia over the past four decades.
