Japanese 20-year-olds celebrate their 'Coming of Age'

THE nation of Japan gathered on Monday to celebrate young adults reaching adulthood with various "Coming of Age" ceremonies. Celebrated on the second Monday of January, the 'Seijin no Hi' ceremonies serve to congratulate and encourage all those who have reached 20 years old over the past year.

According to a local report, about 1,240,000 men and women who were born in 1990 reached the coming of age this year. This is the smallest figure since 1968 in the world's oldest major country.
