Singaporeans treated to last lunar eclipse till 2014

Singaporeans all over the island had their eyes glued to the sky for a celestial treat yesterday night, when the second and last lunar eclipse of the year took place.

The eclipse, which began at about 9pm, is reportedly the last one till April 2014.

The first total lunar eclipse of this year occurred on June 15, and was the longest and darkest eclipse of the century, lasting an hour and 40 minutes.

Yesterday's lunar eclipse in contrast lasted 51 minutes, The Straits Times reported.

Hundreds gathered at viewing spots all over the island. One such popular spot was Marina Bay, where telescopes were offered for public use by local astronomical community Singastro.

A total eclipse only happens during a full moon, when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow. The eclipse was also visible in other parts of the world, from Alaska to Central Asia and Australia.
