Each year, some $1 billion worth of forints (S$1.24 billion) are recycled for fuel in Hungary.
The bank notes are shredded and compressed into paper bricks before they are sent to some charities to augment their heating fuel supplies.
According to Reuters, the quality of these shredded notes are comparable to brown coal and can cover up to a third of the charities' fuel needs. Hungary is the only country which recyles banknotes as fuel.
