Pole dancing grandma

In China, where older women are expected to lead a quiet life tending to their grandchildren, retired grandmother Sun Fengqin's hobby is unusual - she pole dances.

Swings, spins and sultry moves are all in the repertoire of the long-haired 60-year-old, who took on pole dancing in admiration of what she saw as a sexy sport despite its image in China as something associated with strip clubs.

Pole dancing has over the last few years evolved into a popular pastime and a way of staying in shape, with devotees promoting it as a legitimate form of dance and acrobatics.

Local celebs raise $12,000 through pole-dancing event
Local celebrities Hossan Leong, Tan Kheng Hua and Irene Ang raised a total of $12,956 in March by performing pole-dancing to a 400-strong audience at Avalon.

The three were contestants of the grand finale of the Celebrity Pole-off, a charity event organised by Bobbi's Pole Studio.

Irene Ang won the competition by raising the most funds of $4,545 for Singapore Hospice Council (SHC).

She had been training for at least two nights a week for the past month and said that pole-dancing is a milestone she had always wanted to achieve and that the experience was meaningful because it was for SHC, which she had been supporting since December.

"I am grateful and happy for the support from our friends in helping to raise money for SHC tonight. It's made all the time spent and the backaches worth it", said Irene.

Hossan Leong came in second by raising $4,387 for Action for AIDS, and Tan raised $4,024 for Arc Children's Centre.
