The glitterati turned out in full force yesterday at the finale of the
Singapore Fashion Festival, capping the 10 day celebration of local and international fashion trends that set changes in lifestyles.
With Matthew Williamson's Spring Summer collection bringing the festival to
a close, invited guests turned up in their finery to view the designer's
offerings, and, of course, to hobnob with other fashionistas at the post-event party at Barfly.
It is Williamson's first show in Singapore, and the colourful collection showed off
feminine, flowing silhouettes.
Models were decked out in the season's latest shades of brown, blue, coral that gave off relax-by-the-beach vibes,
and dresses received that extra-special touch of full embroidered, beautiful floral patterns.
Details were given extra attention, with metal-studded buttons on
a tunic and embroidered Oriental peonies trailing on a flowy chiffon
dress to evoke an ethnic Asian-African feel.
Accessories were kept to a minimum as the clothes more than made a statement
on their own, but hard-cased gold purses lent a touch of dazzle.
The ready-to-wear collection stood out for its bold designs and
attention-to-detail, against a no-frills set.
On another note, some earlier shows were a visual smorgasboard.
For the Marks & Spencer's show, the runway was carpeted with grass,
while huge floral balls made of white roses hung from the ceiling, evoking a summery mood.
The scent of the roses filled the air as guests found their way to their
seats and the runway was transformed into a bright, emerald-coloured field.
The show presented by Tang Playlab made fun the "it" element as "models"
were plucked off the streets - everyday ordinary folk who were asked to
model for Tangs Playlab.
About 40 men and women of all shapes and sizes gamely took
to the runway and displayed five streetwear looks: Neo Goth, Plaids Please,
Neo Prep, Return to the Rave and Workout.
The collection presented by first-time designer, Baylene, even
had a string quartet, The T'ang Quartet, to accompany the models.
The models, in this case, were local Singapore celebrities like Irene Ang,
Nadya Hutagalung, Andrea d'Cruz and May and Choy.
At the local designers showcase, models wearing white were escorted onto the runway on red Vespa scooters, to bring across the red and white theme, making for a noisy entrance.
