Bicycle touring seems to be the in thing lately, with more and more people taking up cycling. And why not?
It's an interesting way to see the world or the country you're headed to. You can go about at your own pace, and don't need to worry about train or bus or tour schedules. Plus, it's eco-friendly.
Moreover, it's more economical because you save on transport charges, which can be expensive in certain places.
If you are camping, you will also save on accommodation. But, if you don't wish to sleep in a tent (or a hammock under the stars) , there are also affordable bed and breakfasts, homestays or guesthouses.
Bike touring is a great way to meet new people. The biking community is huge and it is possible to get connected to overseas cycling groups via Facebook or the web. Local cyclists might host you and give your a special perspective of the country.
And, of course, bicycle touring is great exercise. Instead of stuffing yourself and vegetating in a food-induced torpor on a tour bus, you will be burning calories and keeping alert to the beauty of country you are visiting.
Just imagine all those calories that you usually gain during other holidays… you'd be burning them on this kind of holiday!
Most of all, it would be exciting to go on such an adventure! Think of all the tales you'd be able to brag about to your friends - and grandchildren one day!
Let's take a look at some interesting bike touring destinations, from easier routes to hardcore adventure ones.
1. South Korea
Jeju, a beautiful island in South Korea that's popular with both local honeymooners and other tourists, is a good spot for cycling. Just take it from this family of three who cycled 300km on their bikes! Everything that they needed was neatly strapped onto their folding bikes.
Taiwan is one of the more well-known destination for bike touring and there are extensive facilities such as bike lanes.
There are many great cycling locations like Taroko National Park (with its stunning 19km gorge made popular by the cycling movie To The Fore) near Hualien and the scenic Sun Moon Lake in Taichung, among many others.
Japan has some challenging and enjoyable cycle touring routes, but it is very safe and clean, and you can camp almost anywhere… in parks, near temples, by the river.
Being a rather more expensive travel destination, bike touring is one of the more economical ways to see the country.
