KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN - Two new direct flights to Jakarta and Shenzhen from Johor's Senai International Airport will be launched next month to meet growing demand.
Johor Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said connectivity has always been an important factor for the state's tourism sector.
"In the past three years we added four international routes between Johor and South-East Asian countries and ridership saw an increase from one million passengers to three million yearly.
"We have also recorded a hike in tourist arrivals by three million to 6.95 million last year since 2013," he said during an official visit to Taiwan on Friday.
Tee said the new flight to Shenzhen involved an international premier airline while the Jakarta flight would be undertaken by a local budget airline.
"With these additional flights, Senai Airport would be catering to seven international destinations including Surabaya and Bandung in Indonesia; Bangkok, Thailand; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; Guangzhou, China as well as the two new destinations.
"There are also flights to seven domestic routes to Penang, Subang, KLIA, Kota Kinabalu, Sibu, Miri and Kuching," he added.
Tee advised local travel agencies to take advantage of this and come up with interesting packages to capture the Chinese and Indonesia tourism market.
"We are expecting to launch the new destinations in January, so we hope travel agencies can prepare itineraries that starts and ends in Johor," he added.
In May, AirAsia launched its inaugural direct flight to Guangzhou from Senai International Airport to cater to the state's increasing Chinese tourist arrivals.
