Eat the freshest sashimi at Japan's Tsukiji Market before it says sayonara

For sushi-loving travellers yet to visit the legendary Tsukiji Market, we have good news - its big move to Toyosu has been put on ice.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, who spoke at a press conference, said that the relocation of the 80-year-old market, if any at all, will only take place in winter 2017 at the earliest while they wait for groundwater test results at the new facility, formerly a gas plant.

This delay means more time for you to sneak in a trip to Japan within the next year, enjoy a fresh sushi breakfast as early as five in the morning and experience one of the most important elements of the country's traditional cuisine in Tsukiji, its home since 1935, located near the shopping district of Ginza.

Famed for its early morning tuna auctions (above), the world's biggest wholesale fish and seafood market even has its own documentary - Tsukiji Wonderland - which was released earlier this year. The film not only shows the passion of Japanese people in Tsukiji, but also features famous sushi chefs such as Jiro Ono of sushi restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo's Ginza, who speaks about his dependence on the market's knowledgeable nakaoroshi (intermediate wholesalers).

Singapore Airlines flies twice daily from Singapore to Tokyo Narita, and 3 times daily to Tokyo Haneda.
