Glamorous rooftop bars, hip art galleries and trendy eateries all jostle for space in this adrenaline-fuelled city, often dubbed "the New York of Asia". Shanghai is best discovered on foot - whether you're strolling along the Bund's historic waterfront, or exploring the French Concession's tree-lined avenues and Art Deco buildings.

Channel your inner hipster at M50, Shanghai's contemporary art hub; or indulge in a tipple at VUE bar, which boasts panoramic views and an outdoor Jacuzzi! Don't leave without trying the city's world-famous xiao long bao: those scrumptious soup dumplings hit the spot every time.

2. For outdoor types: Sydney

If you're feeling adventurous, climb the 1,237 steps leading up to Tiger Cave Temple. Yes, you'll break into a serious sweat - but the stunning views from this mountaintop shrine will make it all worth it.

4. For serious foodies: Osaka

Osaka is a real foodie paradise, so come prepared to eat your way through the city. Head to the lively district of Dotonburi, where you can gorge on luscious street snacks like takoyaki (octopus dumplings), kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) and okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes). With so many craft beer bars popping up in the city, it's also worth sampling an Imperial Stout or IPA from the award-winning Minoh Brewery.

If you need a break from all the feasting, visit Osaka Castle Park, which is especially magnificent during cherry blossom season. When the sun sets, make your way to Namba district for a taste of Osaka's raucous nightlife. Just don't be surprised if you end up partying till dawn!
