Legoland theme park to open in Shanghai in 2022

Lego fans, you'll have a new destination to visit in China come 2022.

Merlin Entertainments, the world's second-largest attractions operator, recently announced its plan to build an outdoor Legoland theme park near Shanghai's Dianshan Lake, Chinese media reported.

"The outdoor amusement theme park covering several hectares will promise a very fun experience," said Merlin Entertainments China's channel marketing director Yang Shengjun said.

The new theme park, slated to make its debut in 2022, will complement the Legoland Discovery Center which also opened in Shanghai last April.

The 3,000 square metre discovery center caters to families with young children and has 10 themed areas, two rides, a 4D cinema, and play areas.

One of its highlights is Miniland which features miniature versions of iconic Shanghai landmarks and attractions that are made using Lego bricks.

The upcoming attraction in Shanghai will be the third Legoland theme park in Asia, the first being Legoland Malaysia which opened in 2012 and the second being Legoland Japan which is set to open in April 2017.

Similar theme parks are also expected to debut in Japan and South Korea in the near future, Shanghai Daily reported.
