2 cosmetic products sold online found with high mercury levels: HSA

SINGAPORE - The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has issued an alert on Tuesday about two cosmetic products sold online that have been found to contain high mercury levels.

They are 'Pati IbuPutih by Janna Lawwa Day Creamy Face n Body white (Putih Gebu Kekal)' and 'Part IbyPutih by Janna Lawwa Night Creamy Face n Body white (Putih Gebu Kekal)'.

These products have been marketed as skin whitening products on various online platforms such as blogs and shopping websites.

HSA has warned that these products have been found to contain high levels of mercury, which is banned from use in cosmetic products.

The authorities also advise those who own these products to stop using and discard them as their mercury content may cause adverse reactions.

They should also seek medical attention if they experience rashes, skin irritation and skin blotchiness.

Prolonged exposure to cosmetic products with high levels of mercury may also affect the kidneys and nervous system as it gets absorbed through the skin.

The HSA added that members of the public should be aware of the risks of purchasing products online as it may be difficult to ascertain their source, quality or legality.

Anyone found breaching the Health Products Act will face a maximum fine of $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to three years.

Members of the public who have information on the sale and supply of these illegal products are encouraged to call HSA's Enforcement Branch at 6866 3485 or email hsa_is@hsa.gov.sg.
