Beauty secrets: Shane Pow

Shane Pow, 24

The MediaCorp artist is the first local celebrity to endorse men's skincare brand Lab Series. The actor - known for his roles in sitcoms such as Channel 8's The Recruit Diaries and Channel U's Served H.O.T. - will star in the brand's local ad campaigns from next month.

Pow entered showbusiness after being scouted by talent management company Beam Artistes after he took part in the 2011 Manhunt, in which he was a finalist.

What is the one product you would not step out of the house without?

Moisturiser with sun protection. My mum always tells me how important it is to keep my skin hydrated and protected from the sun.

So, when I'm filming and want to even out my skin tone while concealing my dark eye circles, I use Lab Series' BB Tinted Moisturizer SPF35 PA+++ ($72).

It is always in my make-up pouch, alongside my M.A.C concealer, liquid foundation and pressed powder.

I have to make sure I look good even when there are no make-up artists on the set.

Which is your favourite perfume?

Uomo by Ermenegildo Zegna ($140 for 100ml). I like fresh-smelling perfumes such as this one. I don't like perfumes that smell too musky.

What is the one grooming service you cannot do without?

A haircut. I visit my regular salon - Air Salon at The Cathay - up to three times a month. My hairstylist, Ark Lin, has a good eye. I often bring him pictures of looks that I want and he will explain to me why that cut or colour may not suit me.

What, in your opinion, is the best beauty invention?

A hairdryer as it is very useful. Besides using it to dry my hair, I use it to dry my clothes.

I switch the hairdryer to the cool setting and use it to cool myself on hot days.

What is the most ridiculous thing you have done in the name of beauty?

When I was 11, I wanted to look like local actor Li Nanxing, who then had a cool haircut with tapered sides. So I decided to get the look myself with an electric shaver.

I shaved off a patch of my hair and panicked. In the end, my mother took me to the barber to get it done properly.

What is the best beauty tip anyone has given you?

A make-up artist shared with me the importance of starting a skincare regimen as early as possible. Especially so now as I keep late nights and have to wear make-up during filming. I follow a skincare ritual to cleanse, tone, moisturise and protect my skin every day.

Also, you should never sleep with your make-up on. The few times when I was so tired and did so, I had skin breakouts and had to spend more time covering up with make-up the following day.
