5 things to know about Seletar Mall and other suburban malls

SINGAPORE - The Seletar Mall, the newest kid on the block, is slated to open its doors to the public on Nov 28.

Here are five things to know about the mall that is tipped to be the largest suburban lifestyle hub in the North-East.

1. Good mix of shops

The four-storey shopping mall including two basements will house more than 130 brands over a net lettable area of 188,000 sq ft. It boasts a diverse mix of anchor tenants which include premium supermarket FairPrice Finest, cineplex Shaw Theatres, foodcourt Foodfare, Japanese casual clothing company Uniqlo, ladies-only fitness centre Amore Fitness & Boutique Spa and department store BHG.

2. Green mall

It has been awarded a Gold in the BCA Green Mark Award by the Building and Construction Authority. environmental impact and performance. The award is based on energy efficiency, water efficiency, environmental protection, indoor environmental quality, and other green features and innovation.

3. Food haven

Around 30 per cent of the nett lettable area will be dedicated to food and beverage outlets. There will be a mix of cafes like The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Starbucks, and restaurants like Fish & Co, Swensen's and Din Tai Fung. The mall will host two firsts - the original Song Fa Bak Kut Teh's first mall outlet and the famous Taiwanese Oki-Machi's first Singapore outlet.

4. Child-friendly

Parents can breathe a sigh of relief at the mall, as it will have child-friendly facilities like nursery rooms, changing stations and a play area at the roof garden.

5. Accessible location

Located at 33 Sengkang West Avenue, the mall has a catchment of 320,000 residents living in HDB flats, private condominiums and landed houses that are within 3km radius of it. The mall will cater to areas like Sengkang, Hougang, Punggol, Seletar and Ang Mo Kio.

Here are five other suburban malls in the heartlands that are a hit:

1. Jurong Point Shopping Centre

Opened in December 1995, Jurong Point has since been enlarged twice: once in December 2000 when it grew to 450,000 sq ft and again in December 2008 to 750,000 sq ft. Currently, Jurong Point is the largest suburban mall in Singapore, housing about 450 retailers. It also serves as a gateway to the Jurong West Industrial estate, Singapore's key educational institutions and the residential population in the West. The mall tries to take Singaporeans overseas without travelling, with areas such as Ginza Delights, Mongkok, Korean Street and Malaysia Boleh. There is also 610-unit condominium right above the retail building.

2. Causeway Point

Causeway Point, an already bustling mall catering to those living in Woodlands and neighbouring estates, is set to be part of bigger, more vibrant retail hub by 2017. Seven million sq ft of new commercial space is planned for the Woodlands Regional Centre, made up of two precincts. The first is a retail hub called Woodlands Central, a 30ha area around Woodlands MRT and Causeway Point, and the second is the 70ha Woodlands North Coast, located between Republic Polytechnic and Woodlands Waterfront, which will be for business and lifestyle uses. The shopping centre is constantly crowded, and recently underwent upgrading.

3. Parkway Parade

Parkway Parade is one of Singapore's first major and biggest suburban malls. It has catered to the needs of local families for the past 30 years.

Parkway Parade is the destination of choice, offering the largest range of stores on the East Coast of Singapore. With over 250 stores conveniently located over six levels including Best Denki, Giant Hypermarket, True Fitness, Isetan, Food Republic and Timezone just to name a few, you're sure to find everything you need. In November 2007, Borders opens it's first suburban store in Singapore at Parkway Parade. In December 2012, a new shopping wing which houses a mix of retail and F&B stores was completed. It includes new tenants such as Din Tai Fung, PappaRich, Thai Express, Twelve Cupcakes, Laline, Metalli and Wanko. Parkway Parade services a densely populated main trade area at just over 524,000 people.

4. Nex

Currently the biggest mall in the north-east, the seven-storey mall is fully integrated with the Serangoon Bus Interchange and the Serangoon Interchange Station, where the North-east Line and the Circle Line intersect. The mall was the first to house a dog park. There are 350 speciality shops in the mall, and tenants include Isetan, FairPrice Xtra 24 hr, Shaw Theatres and Serangoon Public Library. It is also child-friendly, with a rooftop wet and dry play area for children.

5. City Square Mall

City Square Mall received the Best Shopping Centre (Suburbs) award in this year's AsiaOne People's Choice Awards. The award is based on votes by the public. City Square Mall has established itself as Singapore's first eco-mall, which provides a host of state-of-the-art green building feature to raise awareness on the environment, and has bagged awards for it. The 200-odd shops there cater to people of all ages.
