How to wear chokers without looking dated

Are chokers back in fashion? If so, how can I wear them without looking dated?

Chokers, a 1990s-style staple, are indeed making a comeback. In recent seasons, updated versions of it have been seen on the runways, with Chanel and its open choker with oversized pearls being one of the first popular iterations.

The trick to wearing one is to stick to modern, streamlined versions.

Pick hard metallic pieces that rest around your neck and collarbone in a sculptural way. These kinds of chokers have a bit of an artful edge.

Take this silver-plated brass choker from Jennifer Fisher (photo 1, US$369 or S$463, from www.net-a-porter.com), for example.

The understated look is easy to wear and the open-front means that it is flattering for average or thicker necks as well, compared with a closed choker.

You could also try this Kenneth Jay Lane choker (photo 2, $149, from www.pinwheeljewels.com) with an adjustable clasp. The striking necklace looks like multiple gold collars stacked one on top of another.

For a playful detail, why not try this Asos choker (photo 3, $29.70, from www.asos.com) with faux pearls? The accent adds some fun to an otherwise simple necklace.

Think carefully about the neckline of your outfit when you wear chokers. Crewneck tops will fight for attention with the choker and the necklace will not rest nicely.

For minimalist chic, pair the choker with a button-down shirt like this one from Cos (photo 4, $250, from 03-23 Ion Orchard). Make sure to leave the top part of your shirt unbuttoned.

For dresses or rompers, pick ones with V-necks like this one from New Look (photo 5, $69.90, from B2-34 313@somerset) so the choker really gets to shine.
