I washed my face with rice water

Mother knows best? The Her World beauty team tries out old-school beauty hacks their mums swear by to see if they really work.

Use a mask… made from turmeric

What: Mix one teaspoon each of turmeric, honey and milk in a bowl, apply the paste all over the face, and rinse it off once it dries.

The results: "This mixture supposedly has antioxidants to fight free radicals and reduce inflammation. I looked less tired, and my skin was radiant and well moisturised. One thing to note: Turmeric can stain skin, so do a patch test on your arm before trying this." - Carina Koh, beauty writer

Curl your lashes with a teaspoon

What: Blast a metal teaspoon with a hairdryer; test it on the back of your hand to make sure it's not too hot. Hold the spoon with its concave side facing you; position the edge on the lash line. Using the thumb, hold the lashes against the curved bottom of the spoon for a few seconds; work your way along the lash line.

The results: "It takes a little practice to achieve a natural-looking curl, but once you get the hang of it, the results last the entire day." - Lieu Wei Ning, beauty writer

Fade dark spots with mint leaves

What: Crush five mint leaves and mix with water, green tea or honey. Apply the paste on acne blemishes or dark spots, leave it on for 10 minutes, then wash it off.

The results: "My brown spots looked slightly lighter. Mint has salicylic acid, so the paste soothes inflammation too. However, if you have sensitive skin, the cooling sensation from the mint leaves could cause irritation." - Jaclyn Gunasilan, senior beauty writer

Tighten and brighten skin with rice water

What: Wash your face with rice water (the cloudy liquid you get after rinsing rice) for a week.

The results: "Rice water is apparently rich in B vitamins, so it's supposed to have brightening properties and is soothing. I can't say that my complexion got brighter, but I noticed that my skin was smoother and less oily. If it wasn't such a hassle to prepare the rice water every morning, I'd consider using this in place of my toner." - Amanda Lai, beauty writer
