Jay Chou earns praise in new role of daddy

TAIPEI - Pop star Jay Chou has earned full marks in his new role as a father.

In a Facebook posting made after delivering their daugher by Cesarean section, his wife Hannah Quinlivan, 21, wrote: "Thanks everyone for your good wishes, thanks for the medical staff's professional care, thanks for Daddy's full attendance," and appended "100" to indicate the extent of Chou's first and apparently hands-on efforts as a dad.

The post was written in Chinese.

The model-actress accompanied her Tuesday posting with a photo of her former pregnant self, baring her tummy, and another of Chou pointing to her exposed belly.

Fans looking for signs of a baby photo were left disappointed when she earlier posted a Weibo update, merely to say she has voted for herself in an online best TV drama actress poll. The new mother, who gave birth last week, is leading in the category.

As has been his style, Chou, 36, has remained secretive about his firstborn. Neither the birthdate nor the tot's name had been released.

His manager JR Yang is said to be among the very few who knew the delivery date, and Quinlivan's agent has gone on leave abroad - to escape reporters' queries, said China Times.

But, citing sources, it said the baby is a term baby at 37 weeks. The couple opted for a Cesarean delivery on doctors' advice, it added.

Chou's pal, singer Will Liu, had also said Chou and his mother, as Christians, would not pick an auspicious day for the birth.

Although he got married and had a child this year as he had hoped and planned, China Times said Chou's plan to announce the birth next month was blown after rumours broke that the baby has arrived, and their agents had to confirm the news on Monday.

A daughter had also not been his initial hope. Last month, whether or not it was a ruse on his part, he had even said he was considering naming his unborn child Jay Junior.

Still, the star reportedly shed secret tears of joy on seeing the child for the first time and said, "Happy, touched."
