What are some stylish ways to wear shorts?

Club 21's style services manager Lani Chan and freelance stylist Neo Lirong offer tips on how to look your best in this wardrobe staple.

1. High-waisted shorts

They give the illusion of neverending legs. Pop on a pair of heels for that added boost.

"A really hot look is to wear a pair of high-waisted shorts and a top in the same colour. Finish the look with gladiator sandals. It's quite full-on, but stylish," says Ms Chan.

To look more dressed up, pick designs in luxurious fabrics, such as this satin pair from Collate The Label ($109, from www.collatethelabel.com) that can be worn with a camisole and blazer.

2. Culotte-style shorts

These can be worn by a wider group of women, compared with high-waisted shorts, which are more suitable for younger women, says Ms Chan. Wear a crisp button-down shirt with this pair of shorts from Rockstar ($35, from www.rockstar.com.sg) for a smart-casual look.

3. Cut-off shorts

Made mostly from denim, cut-off shorts are casual and tend to be very short.

Throwing on a jacket or vest will instantly polish up the look.

Layering a long jacket adds an unexpected twist and prevents any accidental bum exposure, as demonstrated by fashion blogger Jessica Stein on her Instagram account (tuulavintage).

"Ankle boots might be an interesting footwear option, but they have to be flat. High-heel boots would look trashy," says

Ms Chan. Here is an option from H&M ($49.90, from 1 Grange Road).

4. Printed shorts

They are currently all the rage. Pair printed shorts with a solid-coloured top in a colour that appears on the shorts. "A matching printed top and shorts are interesting, but the top should be a crop top or the whole get-up could look like a pyjama set," says Ms Neo.

The Shona Joy Mark Maker Mini Shorts is available at Et-i-kit ($168, from 34 Kandahar Street).
