A gift that says Chanel on the box is guaranteed to move even the most hard-to-please mom.

But here's an even better idea: why not take her to a Chanel makeup counter for a one-on-one session with a Chanel makeup artist, not just to update her look, but also to get pro advice on age- and condition-specific skincare?

Most Asian women come to Chanel complaining about uneven skin tone, according to a visiting Chanel makeup artist at Rustan's.

Age spots, pigmentation and dryness are common concerns of women of a certain age.

Chanel Research introduces new additions to its Le Blanc whitening line that target aging complexion's melanin degradation process and cell aging.

The Le Blanc L'Extrait is a 28-day nighttime treatment that promises smooth, plump and translucent skin.

It's used in conjunction with the Le Blanc Intensive Whitening Spot Treatment Day and Night Duo.

Aspirational

While Chanel is attracting younger women, especially with brand ambassadors like Lily Rose Depp and Kristen Stewart before her, most Chanel Beauty customers in the Philippines are still mature women, according to brand manager Francesca Sy.

It continues to be aspirational for women in their teens and 20s, she adds.

When applying makeup to older skin, it's vital to prep with proper moisturization, according to the visiting Chanel makeup artist.

She sprays the Hydra Beauty Essence Mist on the face for instant hydration.

It's lightweight and cool, so there's no added weight on the face especially in humid climates.

Next, the makeup artist mixes one part Hydra Beauty Micro Serum with two parts Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation-matte and light, and well suited for tropical weather.

When choosing foundation, it's not about picking the right texture (liquid, gel, cream, cake) but finding one that's suited to your skin type, she advises.

"Apply with a foundation brush, since it's lighter versus a sponge applicator," she adds.

Those blending sponges could mean you'll apply more pressure onto you skin and deposit more product, which could cake and emphasise pores-another concern of many women.

It could also mean tugging at the skin, which could lead to wrinkles.

Besides, they're harder to clean, she says.

Sun-kissed look

For the eyes, she preps with a quick swipe of the Biphase Eye Makeup Remover around the eye area.

She mixes one part of Le Lift Eye Serum with two parts Le Blanc Light Creator Whitening Concealer, and pats them around the eye and nose areas.

For a sun-kissed look, she sculpts the face with swipes of a bronzy shade of Les Beiges Healthy

Glow Luminous Color powder on the cheekbones.

She suggests a darker shade for contouring for nighttime.

She tops it with light dustings of the limited-edition Coco Code quad blush.

Older women should avoid metallic and glitter eye shadows as they tend to emphasise lines and creases, she advises.

Opt for matte and pearly finishes instead.

Or, for an update, try the Stylo Yeux Waterproof eyeliners in Horizon (dark gray) or Terra Rosa (deep purple) from the Cruise 2017 collection.

To lift the eyes, be extra careful when going for the cat's eye look; the upward slant should start from two-thirds of the eyelids, not the tip, because it has a tendency to droop on older skin.

Since Asian women tend to stick to the same look-black eyeliner, black mascara-the makeup artist suggests another subtle change for a less dated look: dark emerald mascara (Inimitable Waterproof in Vert Profond, also from Cruise 2017) that instantly brightens the eyes.

A dark brown (Brun Profond) is also available for the faint-hearted.

The year is also big on lip glosses.

Lucia Pica, Chanel's global creative makeup and colour director, introduced 24 shades of its Rouge Coco Gloss for Spring/Summer 2017, plus three shades of limited-edition top coats-and it's good news for mature women since a bit of shine and shimmer is more flattering on the lips.

Gloss makes lips look plumper. Matte finishes are too harsh as they emphasise lines.

After your mom gets her makeover, cap her day with a bottle of Chanel N°5 L'eau, the modern interpretation of the French house's iconic fragrance.

The day-to-night scent has a citrus opening, musky-woody notes, and a floral heart, and is encased in elegant rectangular beveled glass.

It comes in limited-edition 200-ml bottles.

Chanel Beauty is exclusively available at Rustan's the Beauty Source.
