Mrs Singapore World pageant contestants wow crowd at showcase

As far as talent contests in beauty pageants go, you are likely to see contestants dance, sing, play a musical instrument or twirl the odd baton or two.

But at the showcase for the Mrs Singapore World 2014 pageant on Saturday, Mrs Linda Shuran, 39, showed moves of a different kind.

Instead of a dance routine, the art gallery manager whipped out a table on stage and started doing Chinese calligraphy.

PREVIEW

Mrs Shuran was among the 16 contestants who were at Alexandra Retail Centre, near Labrador Park, to give shoppers a preview of what to expect during the finals of the pageant, which will be held on Dec 8 at Resorts World Sentosa.

Cheers and whistles rang out as they took the stage for the fashion showcase and talent competition.

One by one, they wowed the crowd by showing off their figures and what they could do.

The crowd cheered the loudest when company director Jenny Tay, 42, went on stage.

"I have more than 15 family members and close friends here rooting for me," said the mother of six.

Another finalist who made sure she had her own supporters was Mrs Minakshi Singh, 36.

During her Bollywood dance performance, her fans cheered her on, whistling to the tune she was dancing to.

PANEL OF JUDGES

Her performance impressed not only her fans but also the panel of judges, which comprised former Mrs Singapore winners, sponsor representatives and music producer Jay Lim.

The finalists were chosen during four closed-door auditions between August and October.

Results from the talent competition will contribute 10 per cent to their final scores during the finals next month.
