Netizens can't agree whether newly crowned Miss Hong Kong deserves the title

Barely a day after she was crowned Miss Hong Kong 2017, the internet was abuzz with discussion on whether 23-year-old Juliette Louie deserved the title.

In the finale that took place on Sunday (Sept 3), the actress from Toronto, Canada, beat nine other finalists and emerged as the winner of the beauty pageant.

A hot favourite since the beginning of the pageant, Louie is reported to be the daughter of Henry Louie, one of Hong Kong's top 10 designers.

But not everyone was in agreement when she was announced as the winner of Miss Hong Kong 2017.

Many were disappointed by her poor grasp of the Chinese language during the question and answer segment while others disagreed with her other win of Miss Photogenic, local media reported.

Others took to social media to question the fairness of the contest, as the main judge Carol Cheng, had voted twice for Louie, which helped the latter to turn the tide and win the pageant.

In response, the veteran actress said she picked Louie over runner-up Regina Ho because she felt that Louie had delivered a better overall performance, and praised her display of confidence during the competition.

This year's pageant saw the panel of judges giving the 10 finalists some one-on-one coaching before the finale. They include some of the biggest names in Hong Kong's show business such as Carol Cheng, Natalis Chan, Michael Miu, Jessica Hsuan, Calvin Choy, and others.
