KUALA TERENGGANU - Teacher Janet Tan Bee Loon is taking part in the Mok Kebaya Beauty Contest here to boost her self-confidence and to promote kebaya which has a rich history among the Peranakan Chinese community.
The 53-year-old teacher at SK Tengku Bariah said a former beauty pageant winner encouraged her to take part in the pageant.
"I have never taken part in any beauty pageant before. Contestants are required to wear kebaya and another dress which will be decided by the organisers," said Tan, who has four grown up children and a grandson.
Organising committee chairman Datuk See Meng Geok, who is Terengganu Wanita MCA chairman, said 10 women were taking part in the Mok contest which is open to Chinese women from Terengganu aged above 45.
She said the oldest participant was Lee Peck Gee, 70, from Kuala Terengganu, who has three children and three grandchildren.
Meanwhile, 12 women are taking part in the Mek contest which is open to Chinese women aged below 45 from all over the country.
"We are organising the beauty pageant for the second year in a row.
"Besides promoting kebaya, we also want to promote Visit Terengganu Year 2017," she said.
"The winners are decided by the number of likes on Facebook and by the estimated 800 people who would be attending the dinner.
"The attendees can vote once for the contestants of their choice.
"The public can vote online by going to the Mek and Mok Kebaya Beauty Contest Facebook page," she said.
The event is organised by Terengganu Wanita MCA, Koperasi Kampung Cina Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Malaysia China Chamber of Commerce.
