Review: Moisturisers that claim to offer the most hydration

With names like super-aqua comfort, concentrated glacial hydrator or hydra vital, these moisturisers are shrewdly appealing to a thirst for hydration.

So, how important is a moisturiser for your skin? When you have skin that looks lifeless, dehydrated, rough and filled with fine lines, it makes one look older and more tired. Aesthetics aside, dehydrated skin is not healthy.

We decided to test those that claim to offer the most hydration, as that's the aim of a moisturiser.

Moisturising is one of the more important basic steps of skincare, but the effectiveness of your moisturiser also relies on your efforts in your skincare routine, which includes proper cleansing, exfoliating and toning.

Buying a moisturiser based on its name and the strength of its marketing may lead to disappointment so choosing the right one is important.

Guerlain Super-Aqua Comfort Day Cream Nourishing Age Defying Hydration, S$180

From the richness of the cream to the fragrant scent, it's luxury in a jar. It's supposed to protect the skin during the day, restore it at night and provide 24-hour-age-defying hydration.

I used this only during the day as per instructions and as the last step in my skincare ritual. The texture is smooth and it absorbed easily without leaving any sticky residue. You don't really need to use much and it left my skin feeling nourished and pampered. It also had a long lasting hydration effect as my skin felt plumped up and moist throughout the day. - Dzireena Mahadzir

Algenist Regenerative Anti-Aging Moisturizer, S$122.40

What I like about this moisturiser is its lightweight (almost gel-like) texture. The product is easy to apply and absorbs well, leaving skin soft and supple. The best bit is only a pea size (maybe less) is needed to cover my entire face. To see results (it's said to help skin optimise cell regeneration for youthful skin), I used it diligently twice a day. My skin does feel smoother and rejuvenated.

While it is formulated with alguronic acid (a compound from microalgae to minimise signs of ageing), I find it hard to get past the synthetic scent (chemical-like) which is easily detectable upon application. - Sheela Chandran

Decleor Paris Hydra Floral Anti-pollution Hydrating Gel Cream, S$108.80

This product smells and feels amazing! I applied it in the morning (there's no SPF so unless you're using foundation with SPF, perhaps just use this at night), and before I went to bed. The smell is really soothing and my skin felt great after application. It wasn't very creamy at all and I could barely feel it minutes after applying it.

Upon waking up, I could still feel the effects of the gel cream, as my skin felt really smooth and not tight at all thanks to the hydrating properties. Highly recommended and worth the price! - Nasa Maria Entaban

Dior Hydralife Pro-Youth Sorbet Creme, S$100.30

I must admit I love the pale turquoise colour of this sorbet creme, which has a light floral scent. Lightly textured, it absorbs easily into skin too. After applying this moisturiser day and night, I feel that especially in the mornings, my skin does not feel as tight and dry as before, which is common when sleeping in an air-conditioned room.

Overall, I am quite happy with the hydrating properties of this product. - Wong Li Za

L'Occitane Angelica Hydra Vital Cream, S$60.52

With my dry skin, moisturising is quite an important step in my daily beauty regime. As it did not have any SPF coverage, I only used it at night. Although a cream based product, it was light and filmy when applied and absorbed quickly into the skin. Also, despite sleeping in an air conditioned room every night, my skin felt dewy and fresh, thanks to its light substance but heavy action.

My only gripe is that I am not a fan of the scent which reminds me of freshly cut grass! - Nadine Fernandez

Laneige Water Bank Gel Cream EX, S$46.58

I love the very light gel formula and non-stickiness. Compared to a similar rival product, this one wins for its non-sticky texture. On the cooling feature though, it's fleeting. After three weeks of morning and night use, my skin doesn't feel dry and it's nice to wake up to smooth skin.

It's a reasonably good moisturiser for a normal to combination skin as it left me feeling velvety and plumped for many hours. Although it is formulated with Hydro Ion Mineral, Quinoa extract, Olive Squalene and Tilansia extract - all of which helps skin cells retain and regulate moisture levels - it didn't feel moisturising enough for me on longer days or more than 10 hours. - Sandra Low
