Style watch: Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan in Singapore

China President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan arrived in Singapore early on Friday evening for a two-day state visit.

The trip by the President and the First Lady of China is part of celebrations this year by both countries to mark close bilateral ties and co-operation since diplomatic relations were formalised on Oct 3, 1990.

Life keeps tabs on what the always-elegant Ms Peng will be wearing during her visit here.

We like that her cheongsam has an interesting yet subtle pattern that is reminiscent of snakeskin, and that she chose a jacket that did not obscure her dress.

At the Istana with Singapore President Tony Tan and his wife Mary: What a difference a jacket - or the absence of it - makes. Ms Peng did away with the white blazer she arrived in to reveal her long-sleeved cheongsam, which she accessorised with a matching shawl and clutch.

It must be tiring for Ms Peng to go straight into her formal duties as China's first lady, so it was a smart move for her to arrive in a collared dress that goes easily from day to night.

Her outfit is a masterful showing of how swapping an article of clothing for matching accessories can give the same dress a whole different look.
