SEOUL - Millions of schoolgirls in Asia had their hearts broken when Lee Sungmin, a member of K-pop boy band Super Junior, confirmed that he will marry actress Kim Sa Eun in December.
The confirmation on Tuesday came just hours after Kim denied news reports about their engagement.
Sungmin announced his plan to marry Kim on Super Junior's official homepage, apologising to his fans, called E.L.F, for the fact that they had first heard the news through news reports.
"I met a good woman and will marry her on Dec 13. I am heartbroken that you might have been perplexed and surprised about the news," he wrote on the website.
"The news went viral while I was thinking about how to tell you, E.L.F, my precious friends and those who love me. I wanted to let you know myself. I am really sorry that you had to find out about it through the reports.
"I had to discreetly think about my decision and struggle by myself as I feared that those I should be thankful for would be too shocked or hurt by such news."
The 28-year-old idol expressed his appreciation to his fans, and thanked his bandmates and his label SM Entertainment for respecting his decision.
A representative of Kim's agency also confirmed the reports and said that the couple had already met each other's parents regarding marriage arrangements.
Earlier on Tuesday, local media outlets reported that the two would tie the knot at the luxurious wedding hall The Raum in southern Seoul.
The two first met as co-stars in the musical The Three Musketeers late last year. Their friendship evolved into a romance, and they made their relationship public late last month.
Sungmin reassured his fans that he would continue to remain a member of Super Junior even after his marriage.
The group are gearing up for the two-day Super Show In Tokyo to be held from Oct 29. The band released their seventh studio album Mamacita, in August.
