The Chinese Women's Association (CWA) has surpassed its goal of raising $500,000 for non-profit organisation the St Andrew's Mission Hospital as part of its centenary celebrations.

After the Government matches the funds by 11/2 times, the association will be able to donate a total of $1.25 million to the hospital.

The sum was raised at its gala dinner at Raffles Hotel last night which was attended by 250 guests, including President Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife Mary Tan.

CWA president Betty Chen, 88, said: "We are proud to be able to do this in this special centenary year. With our efforts, we hope to inspire other voluntary associations to do the same."

The first and oldest women's voluntary organisation in Singapore, the CWA was established in 1915 with 23 founding members, including Dr Lee Choo Neo, aunt to the late former prime minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Over the years, the association has raised funds for numerous causes, including for blind and deaf people, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Henderson Senior Citizens' Home.

This year, the CWA also collaborated with the National Museum of Singapore on an exhibition featuring the work of the country's women pioneers, which runs until today.

It has also published a coffee table book 100 Fabulous Years about its founding members and past achievements.

St Andrew's Mission Hospital was founded in 1923 by pioneer female physician Dr Charlotte Ferguson-Davie. It runs services including a community hospital and an autism centre.
