Body positivity has always been a core brand message of beauty brand Dove, but its latest campaign to promote body diversity - through body wash bottles - appears to have missed its mark.
On April 26, Dove posted a video of the limited-edition body wash bottles on its YouTube channel. The bottles come in six different shapes and sizes, and are meant to celebrate the diversity of different body types.
"Our six exclusive bottle designs represent this diversity: just like women, we wanted to show that our iconic bottle can come in all shapes and sizes, too," said Dove in a statement. "Each bottle evokes the shapes, sizes, curves and edges that combine to make every woman their very own limited edition. They're one of a kind - just like you."
Netizens, however, were not sold on the idea of shapely bottles being a reflection of body diversity, and called it an unnecessary marketing stunt that defines women by their body shapes.
And in true netizen fashion, they took the bottles for a spin. Here are some reactions:
1. Help! The bottle types don't reflect my body shape!
2. So, I'm now defined by my body shape?
3. So these are what the designers were inspired by
There's an alternative version, too. We wonder which one truly inspired Dove.
4. Someone beat you to it, Dove
5. Gentlemen, one more thing for you to take note of
