Astronaut Kimiya Yui on Friday sent his first tweet from the International Space Station, where he has just arrived for an extended stay.

Along with a photo of him relaxing in front of a window looking out on the Earth, Yui, 45, wrote in Japanese, Russian and English that he had arrived in space. In Japanese, he added, "Everyone, your Earth is very beautiful, just like all of you."

In the photo, Yui's face appears slightly rounder than usual because in zero-gravity environments some of the blood that is usually pulled down into the lower body by gravity collects in the upper body.

Yui was scheduled to start work that day on scientific experiments on the ISS' Japanese experimental module Kibo. He plans to conduct preparations that are needed to create proteins that could lead to the development of new drugs.
