On Monday police released CCTV footage showing individuals taking parmesan wheels from what appears to be a cheese cellar in Modena. Authorities have since arrested 10 members of a gang related to the event on Monday.
A group from Cerignola, a town situated in the commune of Apulia, Foggia, has been identified as being behind the theft of bottles of wine and parmesan over a period of more than one year.
The gang is said to have stolen a total of 168 parmesan wheels and 16,000 bottles of fine wine in a series of robberies dating back to 2015. The stolen goods are reportedly worth €180,000 (S$272,338).
The Italian police have launched 'Operation Wine and Cheese' to thwart high-end food thefts.
