Citizen Electronics creation clears way for skinnier smartphones

TOKYO - Citizen Electronics has developed one of the world's thinnest switches for use in smartphones and wearable devices.

A push-button switch such as those used to adjust smartphone sound volume, the product is among the slimmest mass-produced switches in the world at just 1.35mm thick. As such, it could help make watches and other wearable devices even thinner.

The Japanese company developed the switch in response to strong demand for thinner products from Chinese and South Korean smartphone manufacturers. Its internal spring was engineered to make the switch slimmer while also increasing strength and ensuring the durability of the push-button action. With its sealed internal structure, the switch could be used in waterproof smartphones and wearable devices.

Beginning in April, Citizen Electronics will turn out some four million of the switches monthly at manufacturing locations in Yamanashi Prefecture and Jiangmen, China.
